Instructions to authors

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine (BEBM) is an open access bilingual peer-reviewed academic journal published monthly by Russian Academy of Medical Science Publishing House (in Russian) and Springer (in English). BEBM is devoted to rapid dissemination of essentially novel and significant experimental results in diverse fields of biology and medicine performed as the planned studies in research centers and institutions. The papers with especially important data are published on priority basis.

The submitted manuscripts should be written in a concise form providing a comprehensive description of employed experimental technique and obtained results.

The manuscript should be submitted with the cover letters from all the institutions where the study was carried out. In printed version, the head of MS lists only those institutions which provided the cover letter.

At the end of MS, it should be signed by all authors. Their complete family names, the first names, and patronymic names are presented in Russian and in English. The address, telephone number, and email of the corresponding author should also be given.

BEBM does not accept: 1) the extensive papers subdivided into a number of individual communications; 2) the papers with description of incomplete studies without definite results and conclusions; and 3) the papers of merely descriptive nature not accompanied with analytic conclusions.

The size of MS with tables should not surpass 6 standard pages (1,800 character each including the spaces). The Editorial Board has the right to abridge MS.

The submitted paper should be typed on single-sided A4 pages in 12-point Times New Roman font with one-and-a-half line spacing and the margins of no less than 2 cm. The body of paper should start with introduction followed by the sections: MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS, and REFERENCES.

The paper should be submitted in electronic form typed in Microsoft Word Editor accompanied with one paper copy. Advisably, a paper written in Russian can be accompanied with authentic English copy.

The paper should start with 1) title; 2) initials and family names of authors; 3) the name of research institute where the study was carried out with the initials and family name of research manager; 4) country; 5)  a concise abstract of 700-900 signs; 6) the key words (no more than 5 items); and 7) the address for correspondence.

The proofs should be carefully written by author(s); the chemical formulas, tables, and the applied doses must be endorsed by author in the margins.

No more than 3 figures can be supplied. The data in figures should not repeat those in tables. The figures should be clear and easily reproducible; the plots and curves are marked with Arabic numerals. Each figure is supplemented with numbers and inscriptions, which should appear in figure space.

The original microphotographs are submitted with individual TIFF or JPG files containing their notation-free fragments. The legends to figures are given at the end of MS. The legends start with general description of the figure, followed by explanation of alphanumeric notations. The legends to microphotographs should indicate magnification and staining/impregnation methods.

No more than 3 tables should contain only necessary research data given in generalized and statistically processed form. Each table is supplied with order number and title. All numbers and units of measurements should correspond to the body of MS.

The paper can use typical abbreviations and acronyms of measurement units, chemical names, and other technical terms listed in www.iramn.ru only after their initial complete spelling. In addition, authors can introduce up to 3 original acronyms and abbreviations.

All mathematical formulas must be carefully verified. They should be formatted as follows: the upper case characters are marked with three lines under a lowercase letter. A stroke through a capital letter means set it in lowercase. Roman and Greek letters should be blue and red, correspondingly. The superscripts and subscripts should be marked with respective ascending and descending strokes.

At the end of  MATERIALS AND METHODS section, the methods of statistical data processing should be specified, and the format of summarized data should be indicated (m±SE, m±SEM, Me (Q1; Q3) etc.). The statistical software and its version, which had been used in the study, should be also given (SPPS Statistics, Statistica, MatLab, etc.). The authors should describe the statistical tests employed to assess significance of the presented data with due account for design of the study. The statistical methods should be substantiated and correctly used. The significance levels must be specified (for instance, p<0.05).

The alphabetical list of references (no more than 15 items published after 1990) is given at the end of MS. The references should not include unpublished papers, the abstracts of meetings and conferences, the abstracts of theses, and the dissertations. The references in the text should give the number in the reference list placed within square brackets. The journal articles should be referenced with abbreviated name of the journal, year, volume, number, and pages. The books are references by title, publisher name, and the year.

If the semantic or technical flaws had been detected during processing of MS, it can be returned to author(s) for correction.

The date of MS submission is the day when it is received by BEBM Editorial Board in the final form.

By signing MS, the authors thereby delegate the rights for its publishing and translation to BEBM. The authors warrant that submitted MS is original: nor the paper neither its figures had been disseminated in other forms. The authors warrant compliance to international humanistic principles in experiments on animals.

The proof of MS is not sent to authors.

The rejected MS is not returned to authors.

No royalty is paid.

Submission of MS to BEBM means complete agreement of the authors with BEBM rules and instructions.
