Influence of fucoxantin on the proliferative activity of human melanocyte culture
Melanocytes play a leading role in protecting the skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV), providing the production of melanin pigment in the process of complex and multi-stage melanogenesis. To suppress hyperpigmentation and abnormal melanogenesis, a search is underway for new drugs that can affect various stages and levels of regulation of melanin synthesis. The aim of the work was to study the effect of the algae pigment fucoxanthin on the proliferative activity of a culture of melanocytes from human skin. The results of our study showed that in high concentrations fucoxanthin may be cytotoxic, which is confirmed by a change in the morphology of melanocytes and a decrease in their proliferative activity.
