The comparison of the efficiency of transplantation of rat and human olfactory ensheathing cells of olfactory mucosa in posttraumatic cysts of spinal cord
The pathological processes that develop as a result of spinal cord injuries often lead to the formation of cysts, the formation of which prevents the regeneration of the spinal cord and the conduction of nerve impulses. Existing surgical and medical treatment methods do not allow for the full recovery of patients. One of the promising directions in this area is the cell therapy. Olfactory ensheathing cells of the olfactory mucosa of the nose showed significant effects on the regeneration of the spinal cord in experimental models and in a number of clinical trials. However, the use of these cells has not been studied in the treatment of posttraumatic cysts of the spinal cord. Cultures from the olfactory mucosa of humans and rats were obtained according to the protocols developed by us. It was first established that 3 and 4 passages of the obtained cultures are most enriched with olfactory ensheathing cells and preferred for further transplantation. In this work, for the first time, the necessary numbers of human and rat olfactory ensheathing cells for transplantation were identified, in which there is an improvement in the motor activity of the hind limbs of rats in posttraumatic cysts of spinal cord. In this case, the therapeutic effect of human cells was more pronounced. The positive dynamics of the recovery of motor activity of the hind limbs of rats, revealed in our work, may indicate regenerative processes in the spinal cord after the transplantation of the olfactory ensheathing cells into the region of post-traumatic cysts.
