Neural stem/progenitor cells of the human olfactory mucosa for the treatment of chronic spinal cord injuries
Spinal cord injuries are one of the leading causes of disability in patients worldwide. Existing surgical and medical approaches to the treatment of such patients remain ineffective, since they do not allow to replenish lost nerve tissue. An actively developing area in this area is cell therapy using neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPC) obtained from various sources, including the olfactory mucosa of mammals. In a number of experimental studies on the transplantation of NSPCs from the olfactory mucosa into the acute and subacute phase of spinal cord injury, positive results were obtained. However, there is practically no data on the use of the olfactory mucosa NSPCs in the treatment of chronic spinal cord injuries. In this work, for the first time, was shown an improvement in the motor activity of the hind limbs of rats after transplantation of the human olfactory mucosa NSPCs after chronic damage of rat spinal cord injury, in post-traumatic cysts.
