Morphological changes in articular cartilage and free-radical lipid peroxidation in rats with posttraumatic osteoarthrosis
The experiment involved 34 male white rats (in 14 rats knee posttraumatic osteoarthrosis was modeled by surgical transection of their anterior cruciate ligaments, 8 rats made the negative control group and had their joint capsules opened with further suturing of the wounds, 12 healthy animals were included in the control group). It was found that the nonreversible loss of hyaluronan by the extracellular matrix of the joint cartilage tissue was associated with oxidative stress along with the accumulation of intermediate lipid peroxidation products in blood serum and the trend to thiol compounds exhaust was the key pattern of the cartilage tissue dystrophic degeneration. It was demonstrated that significant metabolic shifts were associated with the structural modification of the articular hyaline cartilage and featured by the loss of its thickness, decrease of chondrocyte density in the matrix, distress to the arrangement due to the dominance of individual isolated cells with karyopyknosis, karyolysis, and apoptosis signs.
