Escherichia coli

Inhibitory effect of copper and zinc ions on the growth of Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli biofilms
The effect of copper and zinc ions on Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli biofilms was studied. Significant differences were found in the effect of these metals, taken in the form of sulfates or chlorides, on biofilm formation. Zinc ions in small doses (concentration of salt 0.005 M) reduced the growth of S. pyogenes biofilms by 1.5 times. When the concentration of salt increased to 0.05-0.5 M, the growth of biofilm decreased by 2.5 times compared to the positivecontrol. The inhibition was more pronounced on E. coli biofilms – when using zinc sulfate at concentration of 0.005 M, its growth decreased by 4.6 times compared to the positive control. When the salt concentration increased, the growth of E. coli biofilm decreased by 6.8 times. As a part of chloride, zinc ions acted weaker (decrease of growth by 2.2 and 5 times, respectively the concentration). When using copper salts at concentration of 0.005 M, the inhibition of the S. pyogenes biofilm was practically absent, with increase of the salt concentration the degree of inhibition was close to the effect of zinc. On E. coli biofilm, a slight inhibition of growth with small doses of copper ions (by 1.4-1.3 times) was raised with an increase of salt concentration – by 5.6 times for copper sulfate and 2.2 times when using chloride. When exposed copper and zinc ions on the mature biofilm, the inhibition effect was absent.
