Metabolite-mediated interspecific interactions of Salmonella enterica and marine bacteria within biofilms
We investigated the effect of exometabolites from two isolates of the family Bacillaceae on the dynamics of biofilm formation by Salmonella enterica in association with marine bacteria. Cell-free culture supernatants of the marine bacteria Bacillus pumilus and Cytobacillus horneckiae were used. The results of biofilm cultivation were assessed by spectrophotometrically. The metabolites of C. horneckiae stimulated the formation of a multispecies biofilm of S. enterica with Pseudomonas japonica and with the producer strain itself. The metabolites of Bacillus pumilus stimulated biofilm growth with Micrococcus luteus. The metabolites of C. horneckiae and B. pumilus did not affect biofilm formation by Flavobacterium spp., either in monoculture or in association with S. enterica. Thus, metabolites of marine bacteria can act as signaling molecules that initiate the transition of Salmonella into the biofilm phase, thereby increasing the epidemic potential of coastal waters.
